CASE STUDY

The University of New South Wales

In October 2013 the University of New South Wales (UNSW) engaged Jamecam Consulting to facilitate a review of its operating model for the delivery of commercial print (digital and offset), graphic design and mailroom services.

UNSW Facilities Management provided these services through an on-site hub (http://www.p3.unsw.edu.au/); some service provision (graphic design) was managed in-house while the bulk (print and mailroom) was under contract to a preferred vendor.

The objectives of this project were to:

  • Understand and articulate the characteristics of the current P3 model and service delivery
  • Assess P3 from a commercial and qualitative perspective, based on service data, key stakeholder feedback and industry benchmarking
  • Develop a forecast of stakeholders’ desired future service requirements
  • Construct and consider potential models (commercial and operational) to effectively deliver future service needs
  • Assess future models against market best-practice and identify potential vendors, where required, to support each service model

This project was split into three phases:

Phase A – Current state assessment

  • Detailed financial and activity analysis
  • Comprehensive stakeholder feedback report
  • Review of alternate supply chains (leakage) and vendors being used by customers for like services
  • Strengths, weaknesses and risk assessment of current service model
  • Anticipated future requirements and assessment of current model against these

Phase B – Develop potential future state service models

  • Detailed description of potential future service models
  • Advantages/disadvantages analysis of prospective models
  • Financial evaluation of models
  • Risk assessments, for each future model option

Phase C – Market and vendor analysis

  • Market report on comparable service models
  • Potential vendor long-listing report, against each future model option
  • Short-listed vendor assessment report, against each future model option

Jenny Denman (Associate Director, Facilities Management, UNSW) provided this feedback:

“Jamecam recently completed a business model review on print, mail and design services at UNSW. Jason is very well versed in his knowledge in the industry and delivered a well-rounded and considered report. The process from initial briefing, appointment, consultation, workshops and delivery was thorough and timely. I would recommend Jamecam for similar briefs.”

Jamecam was then re-engaged by UNSW to provide subject-matter-expert advice to support the RFP process, which was completed in 2014, to source the future service delivery model and vendor for the University.
